Lord Of The Flies The Lord of the Flies Symbolic significance and an In-depth look in the characters of this story Ryan Farrelly DUE Monday May 24, 1999 Mrs. Ferrelli English 8 Honors In viewing the aspects of the island society, the author William Golding's Lord of the Flies as a symbolic microcosm of society. He chooses to set the children alone in an unsupervised world, leaving them to learn ? the ways of the world' in a natural setting first hand. Many different perspectives can also be considered. Golding's island of marooned youngsters becomes a microcosm. The island represents the individual human and the various characters represent the elements of the human psyche. In My readings I learned that there were deep physiological symbols which led me to investigate into numerous psychology and sociology books. I realized that Golding's world of children's morals and actions then becomes a survey of the human condition, both individually and collectively. Almost textbook in their portrayal, the primary characters Jack, Ralph and Piggy are then best interpreted by Freud's concepts of id, ego and the superego, respectively Traditional psychoanalytic theory states that all human beings are born with instinctual drives that are constantly active even though a person is usually not conscious of thus being driven. Two drives known for sexual pleasure, called libido, the other called aggression In discovering the thrill of the hunt, Jack's pleasure drive is emphasized. In one point in he book Jack said to Ralph ? ?you should have been there with us Ralph. We had a smashing time This statement was made right after Jack had violently had killed a gutted a mother pig. This emphasizes the fact that the boys are losing sight of reality drifting further and further down the river of fantasies. Ralph on the other hand is still in contact with the rash, civil part of his personality lecturing Jack about how he let the fire go out when that was there only rescue. Freud saw this gratification to be one of the basic human needs. In much the same way, Golding portrayed the hunt as a rape with the boys ravenously jumpin g on top of the pig and brutalizing it. This alludes to Freud's explanation of the pleasure drive, he called the libido. The term serves as a dual intent in its psychodynamic and physically sexual sense. Jack's unwillingness to acknowledge the conch as the source of centrality on the island and Ralph as the seat of power is consistent with the portrayal of his self-importance. Jack's lack of compassion for nature, for others, and ultimately for himself is evidenced in his needless hunting. This is proved by his role in the brutal murders of Simon and Piggy, and finally in his burning of the entire island, even at the cost of his owns life. In much the same way, Piggy's demeanor and very character links him to the superego, the conscience factor in Freud's model of the psyche. Golding marks Piggy with the distinction of being more intellectually mature than the others, branding him with a connection to a higher authority: At the very beginning of the story Piggy remarks to Ralph ? aren't there any adults at all this shows his nervousness being in a situation without anyone to supervise or watch over the actions of the ? children.' the outside world. It is because the superego is dependent on outside support that Piggy fares the worst out of the three major characters due to the isolation of the island. Piggy is described as being more socially compatible with adults, and carries himself with a sense of rationale and purpose that often serves as Ralph's moral compass in crisis; although Ralph initially uses the conch to call the others, it is Piggy who possesses the knowledge to blow it as a signal despite his inability to do so because of his bad ?ass-mar.'. Piggy is the rational one who tries to help but is never appreciated. At one point he suggests buil ding a clock to keep some type of order. Active Living for the Older Person Annmarie Leonard Introduction I am required to compile a report on active living in retirement for the older person. I have to include answers to the following four questions: The role of the carer/organisations in promoting positive attitudes to ageing and retirement. Ethnic and cultural influences on the older person in relation to retirement. How health promotion and therapeutic interventions can enhance quality of life for person after retirement. Discuss how family members can be included as partners in care for the older person. The methodology I will be using throughout is the internet, books, library, work experience, personal experience and my own local facilities. I will be referencing throughout and I will have a bibliography at the end. Who is an older person? Who has the right to put an age on it? NOBODY. Each of us are individuals and our daily living is completely different so therefore our level of energy, fitness and so on are also different. We are all un ique in our own ways. Society today has different views on age, some think 40 is old and others say 50 is old, when in actual fact age is only a number. People preparing for retirement should never be made to feel like there life is ending. They need to be supported by their families and friends in order to make the transition from working 5 days a week for the last 40 odd years to having a lot more free time on their hands. A positive attitude towards retirement is a must also and you will find that the fear for these people is quiet strong and may cause them a lot of stress and anguish if they are not supported emotionally and reassured about everything including the bright future that lies ahead for them. The services and activities available in their local area will show them that there life is still well and truly for living. My own area of Edenderry supplies a wide range of activities for not only retiring people but also stuff that there family may want to become involved wit h. My local nursing home Ofalia House runs a day care centre in their premises which supply numerous activities for the older people in the community. These include daily games of bingo which all generations enjoy. I pop along with my nanny every now and then. Arts and Crafts, Pottery and Exercise classes are also available. Some services include a hairdressers at reduced rates so it won’t break the bank. (Ofalia House 2015) Along with what I believe to be an amazing service called â€Å"Meals On Wheels†. (Meals on Wheels 2014) They supply dinners to locals who for whatever reason may not wish to attend the day care facility. This service is very convenient for people and reasonably priced saving them time and money. My local library also runs a chess class for all ages on a Wednesday evening from 7pm-8pm. Arts and Crafts is also on here on a Wednesday morning from 11am-1pm. (Offaly County Council 2014) My local GAA club also runs bingo every Sunday night. This c ould be suitable for people who like to go out of an evening as opposed to playing at the day care centre. Again all the family can join in. (Edenderry GAA 2014) There are also a number of organisations which aid with retirement and other needs for the older person, some of which include Age Action, Bluebird Care, Active Retirement Ireland and Age & Opportunity. These are amazing sites with loads of information for the retiring person their family and also their possible healthcare assistants. It is also the carer’s duty along with the families in order to show encouragement and to be positive about everything. I would also be offering my hand of friendship which in turn will lead to their trust in me and I would take the time to sit and talk about their life experiences through which I have no doubt that I would gain loads of knowledge from and I would value every second that I was in their company. Sometimes all that is needed is a good chat and a cup of tea. They need to be felt valued and that their voice is been heard.

All three sources were written by British people which means that the sources could be biased or contain incorrect information. Source A was written by Commander Thomas Kerr, a naval officer sent to organise the evacuation. Since the naval officer is British we can speculate that the source is biased. Thomas Kerr starts off by saying â€Å"What a terrible night that was, for we had got hold of the odds and ends of an army, not the fighting soldiers. †- this suggests to us that it was a horrible night, the soldiers they had got hold of were like the leftovers from the battle, they were depressed, hungry and they had low morale we know that this could be true because in the DVD we saw in class called ‘The Finest Hour’, a documentary about the evacuation of Dunkirk from a BBC television series, we see soldiers like Peter Vaux who hadn’t eaten for 5 days and was very tired. This source tells us that they weren’t fighting soldiers which we can say is true because if all the suggestions above are true, we can truly conclude that the soldiers weren’t ready to fight. Thomas Kerr goes on to say â€Å"There were hardly any officers, and the few present were useless†- this implies that there were hardly any officers left because they could have been killed or captured during the evacuation, and for the ones that were their they were probably so taken aback by the events going on that they could no longer instruct. It could also tell us that the officers there were tired or injured, so they couldn’t do much. This could be biased because Thomas Kerr could be trying to make us think that the officers were useless to try and make him or other naval commanders look good. Thomas Kerr then says â€Å"but our promise of safety, and the sight of our naval uniforms, resorted some order to the rabbleâ€Å"- this tells us that the navy was promising the soldiers safety and that their ‘glorious’ uniforms resorted some order to the rabble, this can be seen as biased because Thomas Kerr is making us think that the navy was powerful and saying it as if though the navy were the leaders, he himself is a part of the navy and just wants to make them look superior and heroic. Thomas Kerr lastly says â€Å"Their faith in the navy was pathetic; we could only do our best.†- this suggests that the soldiers didn’t really believe in the navy that they thought of them as they did everyone else, it then suggests that they could only do their best. Overall, this source gives us a lot of information on what happened in the evacuation of Dunkirk although quite a bit of the information is biased, in favour of the British and the navy there is some truth in the source.

Buddhism 1.) The First Noble Truth - "Dukkha" A.) The First Noble Truth seems to be an intrinsic understanding that all things are impermanent. This impermanence causes us to feel frustrated when we can't hold on to people or things we think we need. This need helps us feel wanted and/or important. Dukkha can also be described as the suffering we experience and see in our lives. Unpleasant conditions such as being sick, seeing our loved ones get sick and die, getting aggravated over things our children do, losing a job, etc. cause us to experience Dukkha. The Buddha felt that this suffering was brought on by our attachment to people and things. Only by detachment and selfless acts can we become free from the unpleasantness of Dukkha. Another aspect of Dukkha deals with the belief in the importance of oneself. The Five Aggregates are the foundation of this aspect. The "I" saying "I" creates the illusion of "I" which consists of matter, sensations, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness. These five items produce the compound being that experiences Dukkha. B.) I Believe I give significance to things or events that aren't intentionally producing Dukkha. I'm leaving my house to go to work and I happen to leave a couple of minutes late knowing that there is a possibility that I might be late. As I'm driving someone pulls in front of me and is maybe doing the speed limit. I immediately go into reaction mode. This is where I have to realize that the person in front of me is not intentionally trying to make me late for work. (not until I flash my highbeams or honk my horn) Looking at situations objectively and being more proactive can help us deal with Dukkha better. I believe the Buddha understood that "Dukkha Happens" so its how we deal with it that can cause the frustration, sadness, and suffering. C.) I have mixed feelings on the concept of Dukkha. Specifically with the element of detachment. I agree with the idea of detachment from material things but I don't agree when it comes to people. Although I believe material things come and go with memories of them fading as time goes on, I feel as people come and go through our lives, the memories of attachment stay with us embedded in our hearts as well as in our mind. Thesis: The contradiction between one’s public image and unadulterated feelings or desires is a dominant theme in Death in Venice and Cat and Mouse. Both use minor characters to help represent this theme as well as foreshadowing plot. Minor characters may often be overlooked in literature as the reader’s attention is focused on the major characters. However, minor characters are, in fact, an important contributor to theme and plot. On comparing Death in Venice and Cat and Mouse, a similar theme arises; the struggle in human nature between what is conveyed on the surface and what is happening beneath. The minor characters represent this struggle in the major characters, while foreshadowing their fate. In Thomas Mann’s novella, the reader is invited to witness Aschenbach’s struggle with admitting his love for Tadzio, while maintaining his respectable reputation. When examining the old man on the boat and the poor singing quartet, it is clear that the appearance and manner of the minor characters are very similar. They portray Aschenbach’s inner torment and foreshadow his tragic fall from grace. The minor characters in Gà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½nter Grass’s novel represent somewhat differently Mahlke’s actions (participating in the war) conflicting with his inner beliefs. The undermining of the priest and the behaviour of Mahlke towards the lieutenant commander symbolize Mahlke’s struggle and foreshadow his joining the military. Mann’s characters are clearly portrayed as grotesque relating to Aschenbach’s tragic fall from grace, while Grass’s characters are respectable men in society representing his true feelings about the war. The struggle and fate of the Aschenbach personified in the minor characters is arguably more evident in Death in Venice simply because there is one protagonist. Nevertheless, both novel and novella effectively use the minor characters to contribute to this theme and foreshadow plot. In the beginning of chapter three in Death in Venice, Aschenbach is faced with his first unsettling encounter when he meets the old man on the vaperetto. This minor character represents Aschenbach’s hidden desires beginning to expose because of the conflict with youth and age. A description of the old man is given on page 211. â€Å"The company on the upper deck consisted of a group of young men†¦chattering, laughing†¦One of the party, who wore a light yellow summer suit of extravagant cut, a scarlet necktie and a rakishly Panama hat, was the most conspicuous of them all in his shrill hilarity. But, as soon as Aschenbach took a slightly closer look†¦his youth was false. He was old, there was no mistaking it. There were wrinkles round his eyes and mouth. His cheeks’ faint carmine rouge, the brown hair†¦was a wig, his neck was flaccid and scrawny†¦his yellowish full complement of teeth†¦was a cheap artificial set, and his hands with signet rings on both index fingers were those of an old man.† (pg. 211) This quote signifies the truth (the man’s real age) trying to be disguised through make-up, flashy attire, artificial teeth, and young company. Aschenbach’s own struggle for admitting his love for Tadzio and concealing it is being introduced. The old man tries to mask the reality of his age similarly to Aschenbach failing to recognise his true feelings for Tadzio. Aschenbach must deny his inner desires, and hide them from the public eye, as he is a venerated writer. More importantly the grotesqueness in the old man’s forgery of his age foreshadows Aschenbach’s tragic fall from grace. The minor character is said to be â€Å"flaccid† and â€Å"scrawny† indicative of frailty much like Aschenbach’s impending state that consumes him and brings him to his tragic death. Disguising the truth can also be seen in Cat and Mouse through the priest, Father Gusewski. It can be argued that he takes advantage of Pilenz by exploiting his spiritual position. For example, on page 123 Pilenz describes the priest’s occasional â€Å"wanderings of his hands†¦down [Pilenz’s] back†¦to the waist of [Pilenz’s] gym shorts†¦Ã¢â‚¬ , and Father Gusewski uses the power of his spiritual position to defend his behaviour when he says that it was Pilenz’s â€Å"catholic soul he was looking for†. The priest’s inner desires are concealed through his position much like Aschenbach’s are through his. Mahlke’s conflict is in his spiritual inner self conflicting with the inevitably of joining the war. Eventually, he conforms to society and ignores his true opinions of the war. Perhaps, the undermining of the priest foreshadows Mahlke’s efforts to ridicule the lieutenant when Mahlke steals the medal. Also on page 123, the narrator discusses the priest’s attempts at changing his name to sound more Germanic. The priest is in a way complying with the war similarly to Mahlke. Perhaps, the priest’s actions foreshadow Mahlke’s surrender of his faith when he temporarily joins the military. Similarly, the lead singer in the â€Å"beggar virtuoso† lies to Aschenbach when he conceals the truth about the cholera epidemic. The arrival of Aschenbach’s death is once again stressed by the appearance and manner of the minor character. However, there is a development in the grotesqueness of the character, perhaps, demonstrating a progression in Aschenbach’s fall from grace. Words such as â€Å"savagely†, â€Å"grimacing†, â€Å"grotesque†, and â€Å"stench† infer a more sinister aura to the minor characters. The alliteration simply emphasises the filth of the lead singer. This development further depicts the extent of Aschenbach’s inner torment surfacing. Also, with the juxtaposition of opposite societies, the reader is made aware of the conflict between Aschenbach’s inner desires and his image for the public. A hint of sarcasm underlines the singer’s response to Aschenbach’s question about the disinfec tions. The many short, repeated questions and exclamation points seem over-enthusiastic as if the singer is laughing inside and mocking Aschenbach. â€Å"A sickness? But what sickness? Is the sirocco sickness? Is our police a sickness†¦? The signore is having a little joke! A sickness! Certainly not signore!† (pg. 254) Then the singer’s laughing that followed is described as â€Å"shrieking; he pointed his finger up at the guests, as if that laughing company above him were the most comical thing in the world† (pg. 254). Perhaps, the laugh is allegorical of Aschenbach’s opinions of his love for Tadzio. Maybe, Aschenbach is ashamed of his feelings, and feels he is being exposed. The laugh may also be directed towards the visitors and their ignorance of the cholera epidemic. Hence, conveying the future, deadly prospects of the guests and especially Aschenbach’s. Mahlke’s reaction to the lieutenant is similar to that of Aschenbach’s towards the singer. There is an atmosphere of discomfort, exposure, and conflict during the lieutenant commander’s visit on pages 88 through 96. â€Å"Mahlke hadn’t wanted to attend†¦Mahlke began to tremble before the lieutenant commander had even opened his mouth. Mahlke’s hands clutched Mahlke’s knees, but the trembling continued†¦Sudden movement of [the lieutenant’s head]†¦Mahlke trembled, feeling no doubt that he had been recognised, but he hadn’t†¦When [Pilenz] had turned around toward Mahlke, he was gone†¦the only reason why Mahlke had caught [Pilenz’s] attention†¦was that he didn’t join in the laughter†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (pg. 88-96) Mahlke feels uncomfortable around the lieutenant as he trembles and does not laugh with the other boys. If the lieutenant delineates the war, then Mahlke’s attitude towards it is clearly that of someone opposing it. Juxtaposing the hero and the anti-hero represents Mahlke’s inner struggle. He cannot avoid joining the military, yet it goes against his inner beliefs. Mahlke must conform to society and conceal his real opinions much like Aschenbach does his. Mahlke’s dissidence with the war efforts is evident again in his attempt to steal the lieutenant’s medal. This foreshadows Mahlke’s accordance with the military as he has broken the law, and positions himself closer to the lieutenant who is symbolic of the war. In both texts, the minor characters embody the struggle of the major characters, while signifying their fate. The minor characters are, in effect, literary motifs used to symbolize theme and plot. In Death in Venice, Aschenbach must appease his love for Tadzio, as it cannot be unmasked for the public’s eye. However, the famous writer succumbs to the power of his desire and stays in Venice despite the many warning signs, and he is led to his death. The same occurs in Cat and Mouse when Mahlke refuses to return to the military at the end of the novel. Mann and Grass carefully demonstrate the influence minor characters have on the text as a whole. Through characterising the minor characters and including them in the larger scheme of things, the importance of their role is made very clear.

The Cast of Amontillado Analysis

The story was written by Edgar Allan Poe and took place during carnival season in Italy in 1846. In the story the author used the first person narration style and this keeps the originality of the story. The reader get to know exactly what the protagonist was thinking because he was telling the story. So the effect is that he let the audience feel the main character which was Montressor. And this gives a better understanding of the story. We see that Montressor revenged Fortunato for insulting him. Through the story, there is no evidence of those insults. If we look at â€Å"thousand injuries† and â€Å"insult† from the text, we don’t see how those insults came about. The character didn’t change till the end. In fact the last paragraph tells hoe he achieved his goal. It is a good setting. In fact each paragraph described an idea making it easy to follow. On page seven, when he said â€Å"another draught of the Medoc† and â€Å"I broke and reached him a flacon of De Grave† we see and feel the scene going on. And another one â€Å"proceed†, â€Å"I said† too. The conflict in the story is Montressor having been wronged and willing to pay back. I was solved by the death of the antagonist. All the readers’ questions are not answered. In fact there would be a police investigation and montressor could be thrown to jail. And the story doesn’t say any of that. So the readers are still wondering. The shortness of this story allows the reader not to get lost. It helped stay on track and therefore have a better understanding. He focused on the essential. He created this effect also by the first person narration style. Like â€Å"I said†, â€Å"presenting him the wine† on page 10.

When Abe Lincoln was elected in the election of 1860, it caused seven states to secede or leave the South. Four more states joined them and left after the first shots of the Civil War. Four years of fighting took place in battles like Bull Run, Antietam, and Chancellorsville. I stopped at Chancellorsville because the next battle is Gettysburg. I will be talking about this brutal battle. The Battle of Gettysburg was the largest and most famous battle in the American Civil War. This battle took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and last approximately 3 days (July 1 through July 3 1863). It was such an influential battle that it led to the result of too who won the Civil War. Before the fight had even started, cities like Baltimore and Pittsburg were under a threat of being attacked by General Robert E. Lee and his Confederate Army (Southern States). The Union and its new commander, General George G. Meade, were trying to stop the attack. June 30th, that morning, a whole bunch of Confederate troops headed toward the sweet town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The commander looked through his glasses and spotted Federal cavalry that were heading toward Gettysburg. The Confederate Army fled but would be back the following morning. The Union were also outnumbered and still managed to move the Confederates back. This was going to be a close battle. Arevalo 1 â€Å"The following morning, July 1 (start of the battle), divisions of Confederate Army were headed back to Gettysburg. They ran into Federal cavalry again. Events would quickly escalate but General Robert E. Lee fought with about 25,000 and General George Meade had less than 20,000 men.†(www.historyplace.com) The Federals and their cavalry were pushed back all throughout Gettysburg. After this, General Lee told General Ewell to take hold of high ground so that the Federals wouldn’t be able to sneak up on them. But General Ewell hesitated to perform the attack so the Union could possibly go along Cemetery Ridge and bring in reinforcements such as guns, cannons, and mortars. Instead during this time, General Meade was regrouping troops and supplies. He was able to total 100,000 men to arrive. Lee thought that his army was the best and could not loose and he was missing his cavalry which helps to see and hear during the movement of all of the opponent’s troops. â€Å" The cavalry leader had gone with his troops to harass the Federals.† So General Lee came up with a plan. The plan was to attack the Northern army’s defense position. The next morning, July 2nd, Robert E, Lee ordered General Longstreet to attack the Union’s defense position. Longstreet took so much time to gather his troops the he didn’t perform the attack until 4 p.m. â€Å"When the attack broke out, some of the harshest fighting of the Civil War had already taken place. In places like Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, and Peach Orchard. General Longstreet took over Peach Orchard but wasn’t able to go through Little Round Top because of a very observant General Warren for the Union that smelled General Longstreet’s attack plan. This fight lasted until dark and the Confederate’s were unsuccessful. Although the Union was able to hold their ground, they did lose some but managed to hold Cemetery Ridge (defense position).
